Our 48 year old local postman MARTIN GOURLAY who volunteered to run the 13.1 mile GREAT NORTH RUN to raise money for local people whose lives have been touched by MS by supporting the work of the Croydon Branch. Martin, who is married to his wife Sheena has lived in Croydon all his life. He has three supportive children Rebecca ( 17) Neil (13) and Sam (8). He is a keen sportsman and runner and has raised funds for many charities in the past. He ran the Great North on behalf of the charity DebRA . However, as Martin knows a number of people on his post round who are branch members and so he decided to run for us. We are very grateful. The run took place on SEPTEMBER 11th 2007. |
FIFTY STEPS FOR FIFTY YEARS Matt, Gary and Tony braved the elements to take 50 Giant steps across the Giant Causeway Headlands in Ireland’s rugged coastline. Although apprehensive and excited at the same time, they arrived at the start of their walk. The rain had started but had not deterred the boys setting about their dream to make these difficult 50 steps. They walked along the hexagonal steps, all of different sizes and worn with indents filled with rainwater. As they made their way along the rugged terrain, they were cheered on by onlookers saluting their challenge. |

On completing their 50 steps, Matt and Gary sat down to rest but Tony plodded on determined to walk a little further. They all completed 100 steps, which turned into 200 as they had the task of walking back. The challenge was more difficult than they first thought but they were ecstatic to achieve their goal. We are very proud of the team and send our congratulations to them.
NEW MS VEHICLE
Recently, as we celebrated our ‘Fifty Golden Years’, the branch were presented with a new vehicle which was generously sponsored by The Rotary Club of Croydon South. Chairman, Tom Ho, handed over the vehicle to our Chairman, Chris Day, who proudly cut the ribbon. Chris expressed his heartfelt thanks to The Rotary Club of Croydon and said that, without the great fundraising efforts of the Rotary in raising the last £10,000 needed, the purchase of this new vehicle would not have been possible.
The vehicle means a lot to us and has already taken our members on many outings and appointments. We are very grateful to the Rotary Club of Croydon South for their support in raising funds for the new vehicle.
